This is the BRM V16, as raced in the earliest years of F1 (1950-1952). It is powered by

a supercharged 1.5 litre V16 engine that produces loads of power at once so it was difficult

to control.

It wasn't until the 1960's that aerodynamics became a fundamental requirement of a Formula

One car, and the design philosophy changed dramaticaly, the introduction of rear engined cars

meant that the centre of gravity was greatly influenced by weight hence the need for lighter

engines and more downfornce

The 1970's was perhaps the greatest time for innovative ideas on formula one cars, we had skirts

(ground effects), wider tyres, larger wings, aerofoil flip ups and perhaps the most innovative

idea of all time, the Brabham fan car.1970

The 1980's was a slow time for aero and design, it was more the time of engine manufacturers

pitting there finest weapons against each other, names like Honda, Porsche and Renault all

battling for supremacy.Honda dominated the 80's, for engine power there engine was the one to

have, Nigel Mansell famously reporting that his Honda V8 Turbo was so powerful it was

wheelspinning in 5th gear at 150 mph. With 1400 BHP going through the rear wheels its hardly

suprising.Porsche also had there moments taking World Championships with McLaren, while

Renault were on the brink of glory.

The 1990's set the scene for the future in aero and design terms, front and rear wing cars with

tight rear packaging around the engine bay, raised noses also became aparent courtesy of the

1990 tyrell designed by harvey poslethwaite.Williams were the domminant team throught

the 90's with Renault engines

Teams now use massive full scale wind tunnels to simulate race track environments, with full

scale models available, space age technology and materials are used to create these efficient

machines

The future of Formula  could be altered into zero emissions by this single most significant event.

Hydrogen powered Fuel cells emit nothing but water (H2O) when burnt to convert into electrcity.

Formula Zero  is a  racing championship with cars built with Hydrogen powered fuel cells.

In Formula One everything is change expect nice girls!
